Ligularia The Rocket (Leopard Plant The Rocket)

I love how everything about this perennial is a juxtaposition of itself. The heart shaped leaves are yet strongly toothed & how the bright green colour of those leaves contrast with the darker stems that are reminiscent of another Ligularia I have at the opposite side of the same bed (I bought both, at different times, from Reighton Nurseries, a family run garden centre for over 50 years, I’ve used it for years & I am always happy with the quality, value & wide variety of plants I can get from there).

It is only when you stop, breathe & take time to look closely you notice the edges of the leaves have the same dark colouring. It’s at that point you probably notice just how much the pollinators love it too!

There is a clue in the name of the Rocket, this grows to 1.8 m high. The vibrant yellow flowers shout heat & dry, yet this is a lover of moisture, it likes poorly drained clay & loam. The flowers are attached by short equal stalks, at equal distances along the dark central stem.

Those at the base develop & thus die first, but because of this I always feel it flowers for such a long time! When you get a flower cluster such as this (or like on a foxglove) they are known as racemes.
I love plants…hope you’re enjoying my pages, if you are, it would really help if you could:
